Day 5 Blogging Course: Content Creation ✏️

So you've set up your blog. You've picked a theme. You've gathered the tools you need to be successful. Now here's the fun part: content creation!

Yes, those attractive visuals that you create in PicMonkey will be what draw people to your blog, but your content is what will make them stay, click on your affiliate links, and put money in your pocket!

If you don't think that you're a gifted writer, that's OK. I'm certainly not. I'm an accountant, a tax nerd, a spreadsheet monkey. You don't have to be a Hemingway or a Woolf to write good blog content; you just have to stay the course.

And by following a few simple tips, you can create exactly the kind of content for your blog that will engage your readership and make you money.

So without further ado, here are my tips for blog content creation.

🎯 1. Stick to your blog's main topic.

This may sound incredibly obvious, but you would be surprised at how far I've seen some new bloggers stray from their blog's main topic with their content. For example, I've seen a financial blog with a whole series of posts on losing weight and a parenting blog with posts about lipstick recommendations.

The situation would probably have been OK if some kind of connection had been made between the blog's main topic and the individual blog post's topic (e.g., “Best Lipsticks for Busy Moms”), but no attempt was made to do this in these posts.

This ends up doing more harm than good — something of a “jack of all trades, master of none” kind of situation — since the reader is left confused about what particular topic he or she should associate with this blog. The result is that the blog is not “top of mind” about anything.

You see, you want to be “top of mind” for your readers with respect to one or two topics, and you accomplish this by focusing your blog posts only on those one or two topics. You don't want to be all over the place.

For example, I want my blog to be the #1 place Millennials think about when they think about money. And the only way to become that #1 place is for my blog posts to focus only on money and more often than not making the connection to Millennials.

Therefore, the vast majority of the posts on my blog related to money in some way, be it making money, saving money, investing money, etc., and I do my best to tie these posts to Millennials.

If my blog focused on everything under the sun, then it wouldn't really be memorable to anyone, and you want to be memorable, not mishmash.

💡 2. Find inspiration from other bloggers.

Chances are, you're not the only blogger in your niche. I'd bet that no matter your blog topic, there are already at least a couple bloggers out there covering your topic.

And that's OK! Don't let the existence of other bloggers in your niche scare you!

Do you know how many other Millennial-focused money blogs there are out there? A whole bunch! So yes, while I was somewhat of a latecomer to the game, but I was still able to create an extremely profitable blog in 3 months' time. There is so much opportunity out there, and there's plenty to share. Please do not approach business with a scarcity mindset; approach business with an abundance mindset.

As a matter of fact, you should not only avoid fearing other bloggers in your niche, but you should also be inspired by them in terms of topics to blog about!

Let me be clear: I am not saying that you should rip off their content; that's plagiarism. What I'm saying is that no one has a monopoly, say, on blog posts about the Best Auto Insurance Companies for Millennials or the 5 Foods that Fight Belly Fat Fast.

So what I tend to do is look at what other financial bloggers, and in particular Millennial financial bloggers, are blogging about, and I'll take note of their most popular blog posts, and then I'll create my own unique blog post and content on that topic.

Don't try to reinvent the wheel, folks!

⏰ 3. Set aside a specific amount of time to write your content.

Blogging requires focus and undivided attention. At least at first, it's not something that you should do while multitasking. So go ahead, turn off the TV, log out of Netflix and Facebook, and give your blog your undivided attention for 15 or 30 or 60 minutes.

One thing that I started doing to make time for my blog was to start taking the train to and from work rather than driving. Taking the train takes two hours one-way (as opposed to only 90 minutes driving), but while taking the train, I can get a good hour of blogging in as opposed to sitting in my car, stuck in traffic and angry at the world.

Obviously not everybody has the option of efficiently taking public transportation to work. But chances are, if you think creatively about your schedule and your options, you could undoubtedly find some time in your day or week to devote to creating content for your blog.

😊 4. Think about the people you're helping.

The more people you help, the more money you'll make. Think about it.

Who are the richest people in the world? Those who have helped the most people. Think about it:

  • Bill Gates helped us enter the computer age.
  • Jeff Bezos helped us buy products with the click of a button.
  • Mark Zuckerberg helped us connect with our friends online like we've never been able to before.
  • Ingvar Kamprad helped us buy furniture.
  • Larry Page and Sergey Brin helped us search this amazing thing called the Internet.
  • The Walton Family helped us buy everything in one place.

All of these people have helped you and me in some real way.

So beyond the dollars you make, please consider the fact that real people in real time will be reading your blog's content and responding to it. Think about how you can best help them, and blogging inspiration should not be far behind.
